Death and Taxes

Thinking about Tax Day and that saying about “nothing in life is certain except death and taxes” or something like that got me thinking about my Dad and some of the colorful things he used to say. “Leaving three tracks in the snow,” “colder than a whore’s heart outside,” “flatter than pee on a platter,” ” ‘cookie’ is french for ‘crunchy,’ ” and the one that has always left a question in my mind, “dirty pot-licker.” The first indicated that he was tired and that his heiny was dragging. The second had several variations but the meaning is pretty clear-cut. The third was in reference to places like Kansas and hinted to his truck-driving heritage. The fifth was thrown out there one day when he was irritated that, once again, Mom and I had baked the cookies (what was left after we had had our fill of raw dough) nice and soft and chewy. He liked his cookies with nuts and crunchy but we did the baking! Now this last one has always mystified me. Does it mean that the pot is dirty or the person doing the licking is dirty? And who would ever come up with a saying like that? Was he the only person that ever said it?

All things for me to ponder over the one round that my $23 tax refund will buy me.
