Pool days

My girls wanted me to take them to the pool today. So we went down to city hall and got ourselves a punch card and off we went. Now, being a “country” kid, I didn’t spend all day everyday at the city pool like my husband did over the summer. He became a fish at a very early age even though he never had even one swimming lesson. He started each school year browned and water logged. I, however, took swimming lessons from several of the Lee siblings and never got to be that comfortable in the water. I can swim but I still REALLY hate water up my nose. Fortunately, our children have the best of both worlds. We force them into swimming lessons, that they really do like, and we spend a lot of time at bodies of water so they are very comfortable-in the river, the city pool and any hotel pool they can get their feet in. Today my young fishes swam across and back to prove they were worthy of the diving board and I sat on the grass and beamed like the proud parent I was. Yet another thing my kids have accomplished with little to no help from me! Isn’t it awesome, a little sad, but still awesome when they don’t really need you but still like to have you there?

Organization

I have a few words to say about organization: LOVE IT!!! I just read a book called “Getting Things Done” by David Allen and it totally rocked. I was mildly organized before, got a ton of stuff done, but always felt a little overwhelmed by the amount of stuff still out there to do. Plus, I was always worried that I would forget something or there was something I should be doing right now so that I didn’t have to rush later. Well this dude’s system is AMAZING! I think the best part is feeling like you are on top of things. My tiny brain can relax and stop thinking of all the things I need to do because they are all written down and entered into the system so they will get done when they need to get done.

I could go on and on…and I usually do, but there’s things to get done! :)

Camping

We were going to go camping on Tuesday. We have a tent that the fam likes to set up on a sandbar and camp. Just one night is enough. But for the last two years we haven’t found a night where it will work, activities, summer school, work, etc., etc., etc. This summer we had picked Tuesday. Go out on the water Tuesday after the girls yoga class, hang out and chill, set up the tent, have a fire, roast some mallows, play some board games in the insufficient lighting in the tent, sleep uncomfortably on the surprisingly hard sand. Enter the weather forecasters stage left. (I think it’s best that I don’t get started on them!) Because of the “storm” that was coming we didn’t go. Well, I’m sure that you can tell by my current tone of voice that there was no storm. Imagine that.

But I gotta go right now, so this saga is to be continued…

But how much do you suppose there is?

Well, all joking aside, I hope that everyone’s weekend was spectacular! And here is the trivia: How many presidents are buried in Arlington National Cemetery? The prize this week is a quarter pound of Chocolate cheese.

Have a great day!

8 year old birthday parties

Tonight we have 4 extra 8 year olds for the night. Andi wants to take her friends out on the river if the weather holds. But if not, then we might go bowling, or to the movie, or to High Roller, etc., etc., etc. I don’t recall there being that much choice for my birthday parties. Now I’m not whining about my childhood because it was wonderful but when I was a kid, my birthday party was always at the fair. To this day, I hate “the fair.” This of course, was not my parents fault. I just happened to be born on a day that falls during the Vernon county fair 98% of the time.

Wait a minute, there was that birthday party where my mom and my sister made us a treasure hunt and the clues led us to Dairy Queen. Now that was a good one!

Fireworks are awesome!

Just got off the river after the fireworks show. Aren’t fireworks amazing? I love those ones that spread and fall and look like a muppet wig. Those and the huge red ones that cover the whole river, and the ones that kind of fizzle at the end, and the ones that break apart and then each piece breaks apart again, and the ones that are bright like a strobe light, and the swirly gig ones, and the ones that make the HUGE booms, and the…

Aging Body Rule #22

No longer will the aging body stay up late AND wake up early without SEVERE difficulty.

Smart people

Today, I got up close and personal with the reasons that smart people pay someone else to trim their trees and hedges. Lance and I trimmed and loaded and picked up leaves and sticks for 5 hours. (Fortunately, someone decided to turn off the summer today so it wasn’t like we could have done any sun worshiping.) The trimming, of course, isn’t so bad. Pick out the branches that hang too low to mow under, hang over the deck or the roof, died three years ago…cut those bad boys off, hope the kids are clear of the action, and move on to the next one. But then, when your children wise up to what you’re asking them to do and disappear on their bikes, you are left to load up the branches and take them to the yard waste site, and worst of all, there are countless sticks and multitudes of leaves lying around making your yard look like tornado season in Kansas. And they are all at ground level.

Professionals would have taken the mess away with them.

This one truly made me laugh out loud!

And who doesn’t need a good laugh more than once every day?!?

Subliminal (trivia) messages

Does anyone believe in osmosis and subliminal messages? Wouldn’t it be great if we could go to sleep with a book under our head or an educational subject on the tv or playing on a cd and wake up the next morning, or even after a few mornings because it takes more than one, and be able to speak a new language or decifer the quartic formula? And what about subliminal messaging? (Who was the only president never to marry?) Does that work? Should I have messages telling you to buy the phenomenal $25 per pound Gruyere and run it under the Magic 105 that we usually have playing in the store? Have I asked enough questions for one blog?
